CASE STUDY BASED ON THE BEHAVIOURAL PROBLEM

INTRODUCTION

“By Education I mean, an all round drawing out to the best in child and man – body, mind and spirit”. These are the words of Gandhiji, our father of Nation. Education is a process which draws out the best in man with aim of producing a well balanced personality, culturally refined, emotionally stable, ethically sound, logically correct, mentally alert, intellectually competent, technically advanced, morally upright, physically strong, socially efficient and internationally liberal.
“Case study marks the introduction of evolutionary thought into the field of the human soul”. Child study is meat the study of children by the methods of modern science. Children have doubtless been studied ever since there first was a child upon earth, but it is only in our own day that they have become the object of scientist research. The study of human development, whether of the body as a whole or of individual organs, pertains to embryology. The study of the child’s mind is a department of psychology. Teachers, doctors and sanitarians all interested in the study of children from their particular points of view.
The case study helps to collect facts about children and to formulate them in such a way as to makes them available for science and for the use of those who need them for application to practical problems. For thousands of years school masters have been aware that in every class there are children who are lazy, inattentive and content to attempt to remedy these faults by the free application of the care. The study of case again, has a very important bearing upon many sociological and political questions. Teacher again are beginning to realize that the methods by which they get up a subject may be very unsuitable for teaching that subject to a child. I need we are coming to recognize that the primary aim in education should be not instruction in subjects, but development of mind.

NEED AND SIGNIFICANT OF CASE STUDY

Academic achievement is one of the aims of education. A child’s academic achievement is highly improved by parent – child,  teacher – child relationships. It is also enforced by the nature and student’s socioeconomic status, attitudes motivation, personality factors and intelligence which is indulged with the parents. The parent – child relationship is a good key factor for a child to have adjustment in environment and to perform well in academic also. The need for undertaking case study is to replicate the relationship with the parents, teachers and child how to enhances  the child’s adjustment mentally. The friendly motivation given to the child enables him/her to empower concentration and boost them to explore in academics.
The education capacity of the student is judged by his/her achievement in the school. The academic performance in school subjects, will lead them to choose the future couse of life. In the high school level itself the basic things will be known by the students. This is an important stage not only for studying habits influencing the academic achievements, but also to bear on the whole personality of school students. The investigator would like to know, “is there any relationship between parents behaviour on the child’s adjustments and academic achievements of the school students? The knowledge of the relationship between these variables under study would help the parents, teachers and students to make the needed changes.
The results of the case study will be useful to understand the fact, whether parent – child relationship, teacher – child or environment has greater impact on the child’s adjustment and academic outcome of the students. The findings can be utilised in the field of education to develop remedial measures, favourable relationship between the parent and child which in turn help in the high school students. As a result healthier school community, society and the nation will be formed

PROBLEM OF CASE STUDY

Case study is a report or a detailed study collected through efficient method. The scientific mode of connection enriches the teacher to know the drawbacks in the child. Through the case study we can refine the child. During my teaching practice at Mar Augutine high school Thuravoor , I got an opportunity to come across different types of students. There were 25 students in that class and a boy mentiones special attention. His indifferent behaviour and carelessness in studies make me to know about the child in detail. He did not write properly. He always disturb the class and I met his class teacher and enquired about him. I selected Minto P Babu as my child for case study.

OBJECTIVES OF CASE STUDY

  •       To find out the factors affect a child’s development.
  •           To learn what makes for a healthy and happy childhood and what makes unhappy.
  •           To help them to discover their own lives, prosperously.
  •            To chart the development of children in various time.
  •       To examine the progress and well being of children at crical periods from birth to adulthood.
  •            To establish the effects of early childhood experience on later life.
  •           To map dimensions of variations in child’s life.
  •      To obtain child’s view and opinion on their lives.
  •        To assist in policy formation and the provision of services for children and their families.

DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE

To know more about the boy, I used certain methods and techniques. I started observe the child inside and outside the classroom and details were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaire, projective techniques, sociometry, questionnaire, word completion test, sentence completion test, word association test etc

SOCIOMETRY

It is a technique of assessing the social relationship among members in a group through the measurement of the frequency of acceptance or non acceptance between the individuals who constitute the group. It undertakes to define and measure the likes and dislikes of group members. It is developed by mereno and Jennings in 1946. In a class, the children are asked to select those with whom they would like to play or work. Each child makes his choice, and from this data, teacher can construct  a social map which is known as sociogram. The sociogram is a type of seating chart. It sketches the pattern of rejection and attraction in the class by indicating which friend each child would prefer to have in the next seat as a companion in class, on the school bus, or as a partner in the next class meeting that is organized sociogram will help the teacher to identify the stars, clique, mutuals and isolates. Stars are those who are choosen by  many, cliques are those who are choosen exclusively by themselves, mutuals are unit of two individuals choosen reciprocally and isolates  are those who are choosen by nobody.

QUESTIONNAIRE

Questionnaire is a device for securing answers to questions by using a form which the respondent fills in himself. It contains a list of pre-planned and selected questions about some aspect of individuals life, presented in a standard scoring key. Questionnaire contains questions which cannot be obtained from other sources. It should be attractive in appearances, neatly arranged in categories to ensure easy and accurate response.

ANLYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

By closely examining Minto P Babu I came to know that he likes to study, read and write but he is lazy. He is a selfish boy. He does’nt think about his friends and their feelings. He not have any friends in his class. He is little frustrated and also the environment is not much similar to the part of school. His family face a lot of financial crisis. The main reason of his lazyness is that he is not friendly with others in the class.

REMEDIAL MEASURES

I had given suggestion to minto and his teacher. If love and care is given to him, he will be very good. I help him to mingle others with freely and changed his seat to a student he likes very well. I talked to his friends and told them to be friendly with them.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

There are many limitations for the case study. The first thing is there is not enough time to make a detailed study of the child. The second thing is that as I am a teacher trainee, he is not willing to provide more information. Because of these I am not able to collect information as much as possible.

CONCLUTION

The case study is a helpful method to know about a particular child. Both physical and mental problems can be identified early from the class room. So we can find out good situations for the problem. The study aims to rectify the problem of the child and make him to shine, brightening in future. The case study is essential in every class as there are some students in every class.
